Un-inventing certain algorithms

If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

I would definitely un-invent social media algorithms that prioritize sensationalism and divisiveness. While the intention behind social media is to connect people, the way these algorithms are designed to amplify outrage and strange views has had some pretty negative effects on mental health, relationships, and even societal cohesion.

The impact of these algorithms goes beyond just online interactions—they can influence real-world behavior, like how people vote, how they perceive the world, and even how they treat each other. If these algorithms were uninvented, perhaps we could find a better way to use social media that encourages thoughtful, respectful dialogue rather than fueling conflict. It’s not that social media itself is inherently bad, but the way it’s designed today often works against its original purpose of bringing people together. Uninventing these algorithms could open the door to a more balanced and meaningful online experience.

Likewise, If those algorithms were uninvented, maybe we’d see a more authentic, balanced way of interacting online. But it’s tricky, because it would also mean losing some of the good things social media has brought, like awareness of global issues or a platform for marginalized voices. So there should definitely be a strong balance here.
